E.15 Temperature Load by Bimetal
The bimetal structure was verified for the case of a temperature load. When the two layers have the same thickness (total thickness \(h\)), the same elastic modulus, and differ only in their coefficients of thermal expansion, the end displacement is given by:
\[
\small
\begin{array}{r}
\Delta = \frac{3L^{2}}{4h}\left( \alpha_{1} - \alpha_{2} \right)\Delta T\tag{E.15.1}
\end{array}
\]
In the example used, L = 3000 mm, h = 300 mm, \(\small \alpha_{1} = \alpha_{upper} =\) 5E-6, \(\small \alpha_{1} = \alpha_{lower} =\) 10E-6, \(\small \Delta T\)= 50 K. The analytical solution is 5.625 m, and the numerical analysis result is 5.67551 mm (at node 1361).
